The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay technology will be launched at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.
Players will gain the ability to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This move follows just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
