Top TV Selections: Seven Essential Films This Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

The filmmaker's unflinching satire tackles the oppressive nature of feminine aesthetics as well as the dreaded aspects of growing older. Demi Moore offers a brilliant portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old celebrity demoted to hosting a fitness program on TV. Forced aside by her deceitful superior Harvey, she undergoes a secretive and terrifying procedure known as the Substance. This creates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in an increasingly parasitic dynamic between them. October 17th, Paramount+

Yet once a mysterious woman disappears from the ship one night and the entire crew claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills take over. Available now, on Netflix

This Supernatural Story

The acclaimed director tests his film-making abilities in this nifty supernatural story shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. After a clan featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe moves into their recent residence, the lens – as the unseen entity – tracks their movements. The daughter appears aware of the supernatural presence, and it seems guarding her. But why? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist that may be unexpected. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent

Nicolas Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this autobiographical spoof. He acts as a narcissistic film star named Nicolas Cage who agrees to a million-dollar gig to appear at a birthday party on the Spanish island for billionaire Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Contacted by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, Cage's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4

This Creepy Thriller

The director's claustrophobic thriller stands strong without requiring a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, multiple kidnappings has left the local kids frightened. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and locked up in a cellar, he fears a terrible outcome. But the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with spooky callers offering help, and the prophetic visions of Gwen, his sister could save him. An effective horror. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, on Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for greed in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation about the fallen TV preacher and her criminal husband. Andrew Garfield portrays the venal Jim, who declares at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence capitalizing on the people's spiritual convictions. It's a riot of tacky decor, overdone appearance and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain achieves to depict the real-life figure in a likable light. October 14th, early morning, on Film4

Black Bag

This period's additional entry from the filmmaker presents a spy mystery as sharp similar to the collars sported by Michael Fassbender's intelligence officer.
