Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using such medications should be aware of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

People who have come off the jabs report a intense return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you become extremely hungry," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, clinicians stress that while these medications are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle management.
